The Inspired Business Plan: How to Fall Back in Love with your Business

The 10-Year Business Plan by Story Tonic

It’s always on the backburner, isn’t it?

You’ll get to it, you swear — just right after you finish this project/quarter/back to school season...

I’m talking about making progress on your BIG goals.

It’s the thing we ALL know we need to do. But most of us prioritize the urgent day-to-day stuff over investing in our own professional and personal goals.

And after a while, we wonder why we feel stuck. Why we feel unmotivated. Why we keep getting lackluster results.

Here’s the truth…

If you keep repeating the same actions, you can expect to get the same old results.

It’s more important than ever to work on your big goals.

But I know how hard it is to find the time for it. Or the money. Or the willpower.

The thing to keep in mind is that as a business owner and leader, the more you grow, the more your company will grow and succeed. The opposite is also true. If you stop growing, so will your business.

Creating Possibilities

So, I wonder if you ever ask yourself “What will I be doing 10 years from now?” Of course, the truth is, none of us know.

There’s only one thing you can know for sure that you can do now that will make a big difference in 10 years’ time:

Giving yourself options. You want the freedom to create possibilities for yourself.

What would it look like to have the freedom to choose exactly what you want to do in 10 years, in 5 years, in 1 year from now?

Pretty amazing right?

So, here’s what you need to do to get there: You need to create a 1-year plan, a 5 year plan and a 10-year plan for your business.

So, you’re probably thinking "It’s hard enough to see into next month, much less 10 years into the future!" And alongside that, the world is changing faster than ever before.

Here’s the thing…

If you only focus on 6 months or 1 year at a time, you are probably thinking too small and limiting your options.

If you’re only focused on 1 year at a time, you prioritize everything that you have to do and to consider at this point in time (and that’s a lot!) In doing that, you give everything you're dealing with right now much more weight than it deserves in the bigger picture of your life.

It’s easy to lose sight of the possibilities for the future, for your business and for yourself. It’s also easy to end up going in a direction that doesn’t support the life and business that you truly want.

So, what’s possible for you and your business, 10 years from now?

It’s time to create a vision for your life and business that has you energized, motivated and excited…

When you do, it becomes so much clearer what you actually need to work on today and this year so that you can reach not just your 5 year vision but also your 10 year vision— and beyond!

And that focus and knowledge is powerful.

When you start to determine today’s tasks based on your long term vision:

  • It becomes easy to know what to focus on.
  • You will know what to do, despite how you feel in this moment.
  • You make progress every day on your life goals.
  • You get enough done every day so that you don’t feel like your life is passing you by

When you create a clear vision for your life and set the right goals you get  to experience a deeper sense of meaning in your life and in everything you do.

How to create a 10-year plan and fall back in love with your business

So, how do we do this? The first thing is to get clear and specific on the vision of where you want to be 12 months from now.

The trick is not to get caught up with practicalities or action plans, but just to envision what you want to do and be very clear why you want to do it.

Once you have a clearly defined the “what” and “why” of your plan, you’ll then discover the clarity on “how” to make it happen.

So really allow yourself to look beyond what you think is possible for you right now. This doesn’t have to be a huge complicated plan, just a vision that really matters to you.

Your secret weapon to getting it all done

Once you get started working on this, it can feel a bit overwhelming building the bridge from your vision to this moment. That’s when working on this with a coach can get you further and faster than trying to figure it all out on your own.

Here are just 3 reasons hiring a coach can be one of the best investments you make in your business and your secret weapon to making massive progress:

#1 You want accountability so that you can make progress faster

The problem with being a business owner is that there are so many demands on your time! So it’s very hard to carve out the time for professional development. But if you want your business to thrive, you have to spend time working on it, not just working in it.

A coach can help you clear time to think, so you can really envision what your business will look like in 5 or 10 years’ time which then allows you to set realistic goals and figure out how to measure progress.

#2 It’s hard to do it all on your own - and you don’t have to go it alone anymore

Something that isn’t talked about enough is how lonely it can be leading a business. You’re constantly solving problems on your own which is extremely hard. Having someone to talk to and help put things in perspective help you navigate change and challenges much faster and with less anxiety.

Coaches ask questions that get you beyond your own thinking and this outside perspective can be transformative. A certified coach provides insights and support, along with tools and frameworks to help you lead with clarity, move the business forward and achieve sustainable success.

#3 A coach can help you fall back in love with your business

Over time, running your business without support can totally deplete your energy and focus. You can lose sight of the excitement you felt and the impact you wanted to make when you started out.  So instead of making progress in the right direction you start spinning your wheels and your business can just feel like a huge burden.

A coach is there alongside you as you tackle difficult things, process important decisions and navigate change. With guidance and support you can move forward with confidence and start building momentum again.

So take action today and remember, you can do SO much more over the next 10 years than you’ve thought possible - just take it one step at a time.

You’ve got this!
